Except when I was a teenager and as all young adults heavily influenced by my peers - I was never consciously anti-gay. It was not a subject that ever came up in our household as a child.
But in the streets many of the friends I hung out with were heavily influenced by bigotry in their families while growing up - and this of course rubs off ... at an early age your peers have a lot of influence on you. These feelings can last for a long time -sometimes for a lifetime.
It was when I was in my early twenties that I reconciled the concept of homosexuality with what I had been led to believe. I developed a friendship with my supervisor at work - who was very intelligent, very kind and very thoughtful. It was several years before I understood he was gay.
And through out my life thanks to science and my interest in nature and aquariums I learned more and more about human sexuality.
There are many variations of procreation in nature none of which is abhorrent. Humans have a bad habit of reinventing themselves and tend to forget their origins. We are animals and not Gods.
Hell we even forget what we each are from moment to moment - inventing God(s) and other mythical entities whenever convenient to explain what we don't know and understand fully. Some even change religions to fit what they want to believe - as if re-skinning a mobile phone!
Many politicians are reintroducing religion and sexuality as a bone of contention in America .. not that it never went away. Jews and Wasps and Catholics etc -all know that religion has a LOT of baggage attached to it ..... of course not YOUR religion ;-)
Anyways back to sexuality - species including humans can and do often manifest their sexuality in a variety of way's - including monogamy ... but monogamy isn't prevalent overall or even natural - especially in humans where the family unit is promoted heavily in-spite of the practical limitations of long term sexual relationships.
Many species can change sex or partners - often on a dime ....and a many to one relationship is not uncommon - many females to one male and many males to one female.
Polygamy in my opinion is natural and monogamy, homosexuality and bisexuality and transgender-ism - are also natural variants of human sexuality.
We humans tend to isolate and ostracize those who are different from the majority of us.
And what is worse - we pass laws that society must abide by - that isolate and punish those who are not like the majority.
Slavery is a good example as well as a women's rights to vote and be treated equally along side men.
Women through out human history - have been perceived to be less than a whole human being by many MANY men.
Today in Afghanistan and many other nations in the world including our own that is still the case.
So now we have an entire political party platform denying science and making also sexuality a political issue.
Instead we should be celebrating the fact that we are emerging from the dark ages of our prejudices and attaining a higher degree of enlightenment and intelligence. Science - embrace it or deny it. There shouldn't be a choice!
There is however a large contingent of elitists who wish to preserve what they want OTHERS to believe - rather than the truth. They themselves know the truth - acquired thru privileged educations they covet knowledge for themselves as an advantage over the masses.
There is a reason why educating everyone isn't a top priority for those in power!
Homosexuality is natural .... it may not be common but it is not a disease as the Bachmann's would have you believe - nor any of the GOTP candidates like Santorum or Gingrich who are playing on the fears of human beings who find homosexuality to be deviant when it isn't.
Even as we are gaining in intelligence and acquiring the ability to think rationally - we are in a state of turmoil brought about by the likes of Santorum and Gingrich and company .... for political gain.
Divide and conquer.
Never has that phrase held more meaning then it does for the GOTP. Let's cross the threshold of enlightenment and stop these charlatans in their tracks!
