Given the ethnicity of a majority of major league baseball players - MLB should boycott Arizona if the law is not rescinded.

It is racial profiling - something that isn't even done at airports!

What do you think? Comment + poll.

Right now I have to wonder what Albert Puhols or anybody with brown skin in Arizona is thinking.

If your one of the 70% of (white) Arizonians who support this law - you are a disgrace to America.

Agreed Coral...as a baseball fan I can only imagine what the hispanic players in MLB think about this. What's sad is that thousands of American citizens will be unfairly harassed by this law...but if one celebrity or MLB player gets harassed because of it, then people won't like it anymore. Too bad for your average American citizen.

The athletes at the very least should speak out. And, if they're willing to lose some salary, be fined, if they're willing to hurt their overall stats, let it be. It's another good idea.

I would like to see this come from the players themselves - just refuse to even get on the plane out of respect for hispanic players (the US citizens who could still be stopped for "driving while brown")

I would like to see the teams look into canceling cactus league (pre-season) in Arizona and moving to Texas, florida or elsewhere; pull all roots out of Arizona

Football too, no play in Arizona as long as hispanic football players who are US citizens can be stopped for no reason

\Maybe the wingnuts will get a clue

This poll shows how far the democratic left has gone in betraying america. They have pandered to the basest, even criminal, elements of every "victim" group and have succeeded in shaping the dialogue so that law-abiding blacks, hispanics and others must identify themselves with criminals -- or else they are really "white". It is a shocking turn for the party of truman, and is speeding up the collapse of modernity in america, under the weight of multiculuturalism.

Are most illegal immigrants decent hard working people seeking a better life.

I could not answer this question. If some one from Mexico or any other country for that matter, wants to come to the US, let them come legally. This is the only way we know what we are letting into our country. This isn't about legal immigration, this is about illegal immigration. One of the purposes of legal immigration is to try to keep the drug cartel problem that Mexico has out of this country. Letting people come into this country unchecked is a problem of national security. Some times it takes throwing political correctness out the window to solve the problem.

... let them come legally.

This is the key. If immigration is more or less open, as it was throughout the 19th century, then they would be only too happy to come immigrate legally.

But immigration is not open. The waiting list for unskilled labor is equivalent to a refusal. Faced with a choice between my own illegality or my children's misery... I hope I would make the right choice...

See what happens? OOps... I didn't mean to arrest you Antonio Banderas. I was celebrating my baseball game. Please tell Jimmy Smits he can call his lawyer when I figure out where I dropped the keys to the jail cell. Maybe that guy down in solitary who caters to the Dbacks box seats has an idea. Do any of you remember when I fired my handgun and used my taser? Just another sports night out in the Arizona desert.

So, Fred, you are in favor of shredding the Constitution? Or at the very least the 4th admendment.

No, Banderas and Smits are not "illegals" but they are in danger of being locked up if they don't carry their "papers." And don't say it won't happen -- it already has.

This is a stupid poll. There is nothing in the law that states anything about race being a factor. Further more, the law states clearly that a driving offence must be committed before someone can be pulled over. Finally if you are here illegally, you are breaking the law, irregardless of your motivation for being here.

It does not state that a driving offence must be committed before someone can be pulled over...it says...it only requires "reasonable suspicion" that a person might be illegal...no other offence or law breaking or anything. So why would a law enforcement officer have "reasonable suspicion" that a person might be illegal in Arizona? Is it what kind of dog they have? Is it what kind of car they drive? Is it what kind of clothes they wear? Or is it their color of hair, color of eyes, or color of skin? Hmmmm...I wonder.

Wrong. It specifically states that a driving offence must be committed in order to pull over a vehicle. To say otherwise is a clear indication that you have not read the bill.

Probable cause is built upon reasonable suspicion. Reasonable suspicion simply gives the officer the right to investigate. Probable cause to arrest is based upon the totality of the circumstances gained from the investigation. All of this must lead a reasonable person to believe a crime has been committed by the person to be arrested.

Just ask those old-timers in Mississippi and Alabama how they've been interpreting the law for as long as non-whites have been driving cars on *their* roads. Or walking down *their* streets. Or just being there....

If it "clearly states" that...then provide a link to that language...because the language I read says...

FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR AGENCY OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS
STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES, A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE, WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THE PERSON'S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PURSUANT TO 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1373(c).

There is a separate section dealing with traffic stops, but this section alone gives law enforcement the right to detain anyone for proof of citizenship without any need for "probable cause"....just "reasonable suspicion"....whatever that means.

Reasonable suspicion is the legal requirement for a detention. Probable cause is the legal requirement for an arrest. Probable cause is based on the totality of the circumstances.

Thank God we are a nation and not a bunch of independent colonies. I wonder how the whites in Arizona would feel if they were the political minority in their State. American hispanic businesses and citizens should relocate to Arizona and take charge of the States politics!

Coral, you're stirring an empty pot. Believe it or not, a significant majority of the Nation supports what AZ has done and you are correct, several other states will follow suit. This is just the beginning of States Rights being pursued in earnest over an all-powerful fed.

If all of the latino owned businesses in AZ left, they'd be replaced within weeks. The consumer will always draw business. And besides, where would they relocate? That bastion of growth and prosperity, with it's oh so business friendly attitude known as kalifornia?

First of all, what resource do you have to assert that a "significant majority of the Nation supports" this. Second of all, even if it is true (and the polls I've seen indicate it is not), it doesn't matter since the bill is unconstitutional.

No because one has nothing to do with the other. Besides there is a difference being an illegal and legal in this country. We just can't look the other way with regard to 12 million illegals many of whom are from Mexico.

Immigration is best when performed in an orderly fashion wherein a variety of groups are able to become Americans. Immigrants need time to assimilate and having too much of one group will retard that process. We are supposed to be a melting pot. A melting pot is an assimilation of various groups, not an assimilation of a preponderant group.

It is racial profiling - something that isn't even done at airports!

It does not necessarily mean that stopping someone has a racial motive. For example, what if say someone was killed and witnesses said they thought the shooter "looked" Mexican and spoke Spanish. Does this mean that a law enforcement officers should ignore the witness reports? It doesn't make sense. True, there are times when racism is involved by we just can't toss possible leads to the wind and hope for the best.

I used to play basketball. In Europe (France, in my case), sports are organized along "club" line, rather than through the school system. As a result, I was able to continue playing into my late 50s (when an arrhythmia finally stopped me) ... gradually dropping in category from the fairly decent level I held in my 30s.

For several years, around 1995, I played on an urban team... with players of all sorts of origins. There were Blacks whose ancestors came from Senegal or Cameroun, Muslims whose grandparents came from Morocco or Algeria and even a couple "Joe Six-Pack" ordinary French! I was the only one who wasn't born with French citizenship.

I was also the only one who never, ever had my ID card checked by the police.

Aryanzona is a very bad idea.

But, on principle, I don't believe that anybody, or anyTHING, should boycott Arizona, because of its heroic action! This legislation, passed by the State of Arizona is, what I hope will be, a groundbreaking effort, which will involve Americans in taking-back their country, and holding their "leaders" to account...for ignoring this issue...far too long. It'll cost Obama, votes...but, so what?

I think the real crime is that it actually took a state law for the existing immigration laws to be enforced. Do some research on how Mexico treats illegal immigrants and get back to me. Until then, I think you should all quit screaming bloody murder.

MLB players must follow their own principles... I don't imagine they would sacrifity their marketability for a civil rights issue, but I HOPE I am proved wrong. As for the fans, we ARE boycotting Aryanzona's products, cancelled our vacation plans to Sedona and are seriously considering joining the ACLU.

Players, owners: It would be nice for you to stand up for the rights of citizens and residents who have fought and bled for this country. It is incredible that a state would dare to target us in this manner. And make no mistake, I have been repeateldy stopped while "driving while brown."
